EV Charger Installation Cost UK (2025): Honest Ranges & How to Reduce Them

Real UK installed costs for 7kW, 22kW, 50kW and 150kW EV chargers in 2025 — the four cost drivers, and five levers that cut installation cost 20–40%.

EV charger installation cost in the UK depends on four variables: charger speed, distance from the electrical supply, whether the site needs a DNO upgrade, and how much civils work the ground requires. This guide gives the honest ranges for 2025, plus the levers that move the number up or down.

Installed cost by charger type (UK, 2025)

These include hardware, cable runs under ~30m, commissioning and back-office onboarding. They exclude DNO reinforcement, substations, and major groundworks.

The four cost drivers

1. Electrical capacity

If your existing supply has headroom, you avoid a DNO application entirely. If not, a G99 supply upgrade adds £15,000–£200,000+ and 6–18 months. See our DNO application guide.

2. Cable and civils

Trenching costs £150–£350 per linear metre in tarmac. Every metre further from the intake position is a real line item — smart bay placement is the single biggest cost lever on multi-bay schemes.

3. Hardware choice

A commercial-grade 7kW OCPP unit is £900–£1,800; a 150kW DC unit is £22,000–£45,000 hardware-only. Insist on OCPP 1.6J or 2.0.1 to avoid vendor lock-in.

4. Load management vs supply upgrade

A £2,000–£8,000 dynamic load management module regularly replaces a £50,000+ DNO upgrade. Independent designers default to DLM-first; installers tied to hardware brands often don't.

How to reduce EV charger installation cost

  1. Site chargers close to the LV panel — trenching is often 20–40% of scheme cost.
  2. Design for load management first — before assuming a supply upgrade.
  3. Phase the works — install cable and ductwork for future bays now; add hardware in years 2–5.
  4. Claim every grant — WCS, EVIG, EVCG for landlords. See our grants guide.
  5. Compete three quotes independently — hardware-tied installers price the same scheme very differently.
